Log in at qantas.com, go to ‘Bookings’ and select ‘Upgrade’ for your chosen booking, or request an upgrade in the Qantas App

Upgrades can be requested up to 10 hours before departure on international flights and up to five hours on domestic flights

For some international flights, you can opt-in to be eligible for an Upgrade Reward up to the gate - this will give you the best chance of an upgrade

Check the status of your upgrade request at qantas.com and in your flight details within the Qantas App - where possible we’ll notify you with an SMS

Tips for Classic Upgrade Rewards

Make sure your e-ticket has been issued

You need to have an eligible paid and confirmed ticket on a Qantas flight with a Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket.

Ensure you have enough points for the upgrade

You must have enough points for the Classic Upgrade Reward at the time you request it and when the upgrade is confirmed. Top-up points and family transfers may assist in ensuring that enough points are available.

Missed your chance to request an upgrade on a domestic flight?

You may be able to use your Qantas Points to request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward from three hours before your flight departs, after checking in.

How Upgrade Reward requests are processed

Classic Upgrade Reward requests are prioritised based on several factors as determined by Qantas including your original booked cabin and your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership tier. Upgrade requests will be reviewed as follows:

Membership tier Domestic Upgrades International Upgrades
Platinum One Within three days of the scheduled flight departure Within seven days of the scheduled flight departure
Platinum Within three days of the scheduled flight departure Within three days of the scheduled flight departure
Gold, Silver, Bronze Within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure Within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure
Classic Upgrade Reward registrations

It may not be possible to confirm your international Classic Upgrade Reward according to the timetable above even if seats are available for sale in the upgrade cabin due to expected future commercial passenger demand.

If your upgrade is confirmed, it will be noted in 'Bookings' at qantas.com and in your flight details within the Qantas App Where possible we’ll notify you with an SMS. You’ll also be informed when you check-in to your flight at the airport. Qantas Points will be deducted from your account when your upgrade is confirmed.

Domestic On Departure Upgrade Rewards

If you’re a Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, Qantas Club or Points Club Plus member, you can enjoy the exclusive ability to request a last-minute upgrade within three hours of departure.

Add your domestic flight to 'Your Trips' in the Qantas App You'll need your booking reference and last name.

Simply check-in to your flight from 24 hours before departure.

If available, you'll be given the option to 'Request Upgrade' in the Qantas App from three hours before departure. If successful, your upgrade will be confirmed on the spot.

Useful information about upgrades

If you're travelling with family, your upgrade request will include all passengers in your booking who are eligible family members. If your booking includes passengers other than eligible family members, you'll need to call Qantas Contact Centres to split the booking and then you'll be able to request an upgrade.

If you're not travelling but want to use your points to request an upgrade for an eligible family member, the upgrade will be awarded according to the eligible family member's priority, not the status of the Qantas Frequent Flyer whose points are being used. An exception is made when Platinum One members (who aren’t travelling) redeem points for an upgrade on behalf of eligible family members - in this case the eligible family members will enjoy a higher priority.

How to request an upgrade for an eligible family member who's not travelling with you:

  • Log in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account at the Qantas website
  • Select  'Upgrade a family member
  • Enter their Booking reference and Last name and follow the steps

Platinum One, Platinum, Gold, Qantas Club and Points Club Plus members with a paid and confirmed ticket, once checked-in, can request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade Reward via the Qantas App. If the ability to request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade is unavailable in the app, there are no seats available for a last-minute upgrade.

You may request a Domestic On Departure Upgrade from three hours before scheduled departure until boarding commences on Qantas operated services with a QF flight number on your ticket (excluding QF1-299 and QF350-389). For full details on domestic On Departure Upgrade Rewards, see the terms and conditions

Upgrade requests for eligible family members who aren't on the same booking, and/or requests for unaccompanied minors (children under 12), and passengers who require mobility assistance will need to be made at Australian domestic Qantas Club lounges or domestic Business lounges.

Qantas may occasionally have to restrict this facility on some routes or under special circumstances (for example, where there is an unexpected disruption to services resulting in heavy demands on Qantas Club personnel).

Upgrades may become available at the last minute due to cancellations, no-shows or missed connections. To increase your chances of an upgrade your request will be further considered at the airport. When eligible simply select 'Register me for an upgrade at the airport' when you register for a Classic Upgrade Reward.

Before opting-in to be eligible for an upgrade up to the gate, note:

  • For upgrades at the airport, if you're travelling continuously on a flight that stops in one or more ports (with the same flight number), you'll only be eligible for an upgrade on the last leg and only if that last leg has a flying time longer than three hours. Points will only be deducted for the portion of your flight that was upgraded.
  • Only bookings containing one passenger will be eligible to register for an upgrade at the airport.
  • When requesting an upgrade to Business you must also select the option for a Premium Economy upgrade (when offered) to be considered for an upgrade at the airport.
  • If your upgrade is confirmed at the airport, you may not be able to use some of the benefits that you receive with the upgrade such as your additional baggage allowance or lounge access, where available, if your upgrade is confirmed at the gate.
  • An upgrade at the airport requires the same number of points as an upgrade prior to arrival at the airport, regardless of whether or not you're able to use some of the benefits that you receive with the upgrade such as additional baggage allowance and lounge access, where available.
  • If a request for an upgrade at the airport is successful, it can’t be refused. You'll be required to travel in the upgrade cabin in the seat you've been allocated. This is because the upgrade may be awarded as your flight is due to depart and airport staff will not be able to re-seat you on the aircraft.
