A short stroll across from the new Kingston Foreshore development lies the suburb’s original shopping plaza and that’s where you’ll find a well-loved local treasure in Silo Bakery. Competition for coffee bragging rights is alive and well in Kingston and Silo grinds with the best of them but the bakery’s calling card is its impeccably presented house-baked breads, tarts and pastries. It’s good that the shop’s sweet treats are kept behind a glass display as they, in particular, tend to invite Homer Simpson-esque salivation. If you can stomach the ongoing bustle inside Silo’s doors and the hot-and-cold service then stick around for the lunch menu that changes monthly but never ceases to satisfy.

Location

Much like nearby Manuka, Kingston has long been one of Canberra’s hotspots for dining, cafes, high-end shopping and nightlife – and that reputation has been well and truly consolidated with further cultural and residential developments in recent years. An attractive, leafy, centrally located suburb abutting the south-eastern shore of Lake Burley Griffin.
