Hyatt Centric Melbourne – Hotel Review

hyatt centric melbourne balcony terrace

Sharp lines and sleek finishes give Hyatt Centric, a contemporary hotel in the south-west corner of Melbourne’s CBD, an enviable (and definitely photogenic) edge. This new-wave brand of minimalism may be covetable but it’s also soothing, easing guests into a more tranquil ambience than the one that buzzes around the hotel’s feet. The luxury in-room extras, namely Mr. Smith amenities and capsule machines, help a little, too. Read on for the full review.

The location is a great thing for those keen to hightail it around the city, of course. Within strolling distance of Crown, the South Bank precinct and a few tram stops from Flinders Lane’s best eateries, it’s an attractive stay both inside and out.

Where is Hyatt Centric Melbourne?

Towards the southern end of the central city hub on Downie Street near the corner of Flinders, the hotel sits on one of the city’s quieter thoroughfares, shaded by towering buildings. It’s about a half hour drive from Melbourne Airport.

What’s near Hyatt Centric Melbourne?

Just a 15 minute walk to both Docklands and Southbank precincts, it’s conceivable to do so even with arms laden with shopping bags and a stomach full from the riverside restaurants. If you’re looking to get somewhere fast, the hotel is within the free tram zone, making must-visits such as the National Gallery of Victoria easily reachable. For a no-fuss access to the airport, Southern Cross Station is also around the block.

Start the day in your neutrally coloured, minimalist room with a hot coffee courtesy of the in-room Nespresso machine, then get fresh in the rainwater shower with luxurious Mr. Smith products and with a podcast booming from the Bose Bluetooth speakers. There are also dedicated workspaces along with USB charging points. Even your little sidekick is welcome – book one of the pet-friendly balcony rooms between the first and fourth floors.

Restaurants and bars

centric hyatt restaurant and bar

The casual dining space Level 25 Restaurant and Bar will be your second home in the hotel. Take in panoramic views of the Yarra River with state-sourced produce from the all-day food and beverage menu (our pick is the Amaretto Sour). Keep the kids’ hands off your meal by ordering the Little Mezze Board for them with prosciutto, cucumber sticks and tabbouleh. If you’re in a rush, head to the bar for some freshly shucked local oysters with citrus mignonette and a glass of bubbles. Or stop into Allie Lane downstairs for a coffee or house-baked pastry if you’re seriously on the go. Room service is also offered.

Sustainability

Green touches are throughout the hotel, with sustainable hooded bathrobes and slippers, as well as waste-free Mr. Smith amenities. The Hyatt Centric also abides by a single-use plastic-free commitment.

Accessibility

An option to book the Accessible Premier Suite means a fully equipped room that meets the Disability Service Australia Standards with open-plan living and added railings for mobility. Service animals are also welcome throughout the hotel.

Travel for work

With free wi-fi, the work possibilities are endless. Take advantage of the peace and quiet in the room’s study nook or venture out to the outdoor terrace for a change of scenery. If your team is travelling, there is a flexible space on level six with all things AV that can be separated into six smaller rooms or left as is for 150 people to gather.

Gym and pool

Tucked away on level six is a heated zen-like 25-metre pool where guests can escape the fast-paced city on a poolside lounge adorned with mood lighting, it’s open between 5am and 10pm daily. The 24-hour fitness studio is fitted with cardio machines and weights as well as two Peloton bikes.

What you need to know

At the end of the hallway on all 25 floors is a tribute to the city, complete with memorabilia from local icons. Depending on your floor, you’ll find a dedication to the rattling Melbourne Tram, the MCG or even Dame Edna.
