39 Things You Can Only Do in Brisbane
Big-ticket events aside, Brisbane has a lot on the boil. From its flourishing food scene to a spate of premium hotel openings, here’s everything that’s set to sizzle in the Queensland capital this year.
Find luxury on the wharf
1/40Nearing completion, Queen’s Wharf – a $3.6 billion development spread across 12 hectares of prime riverfront centred around The Star Brisbane – is the city’s newest playground. The precinct’s staggered opening since August has welcomed luxury hotel The Star Grand and restaurants including Fat Noodle, by celebrity chef Luke Nguyen, and Japanese fine-diner Sokyo to the Queensland capital. The Sky Deck, perched 100 metres above the CBD, has quickly become the coolest place for relaxed cocktails, offering 360-degree views and glam open-air bar Cicada Blu. If you’re visiting between 4–15 December, be sure to check out Sono Lumo. The Star’s inaugural festive spectacle will take over the precinct with dynamic audiovisual projections, walk-through installations, live music performances and more.

Take a daytrip
3/40Idyllic North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is just a 25-minute ferry ride from Toondah Harbour in Cleveland, about 50 minutes’ drive from the CBD. You can explore the world’s second-largest sand island – affectionately known as “Straddie” – via the recently completed 400-metre walkway from Point Lookout, between Snapper Street and Frenchmans Beach. Part of the Minjerribah Panorama Coastal Walk, its platforms are ideally placed for unobstructed Coral Sea views. Discover the island’s rich First Nations heritage on a four-hour 4WD adventure with Yura Tours (including seafood picnic on the beach) then sip a craft brew while overlooking the water at Straddie Brewing Co before jumping on the ferry back to the mainland.
Base yourself at the elegant Pullman King George Square, where comfort meets style in the heart of the city. Book via Qantas Hotels & Holidays to save 43% and get a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival, daily buffet breakfast for two guests, guaranteed room update to an Executive King Room with late checkout until 1pm. Fire up your appetite
4/40Follow the flicker of flames to Fortitude Valley’s Agnes, one of Brisbane’s hottest restaurants. The fiery hearth at the heritage warehouse touches everything from smoked tomatoes served with whipped bottarga to a mighty Bangalow pork chop topped with guajillo chilli and almond mole. Two kilometres away, offshoot Agnes Bakery honours the woodfired ethos with smoked potato sourdough and twice-baked almond croissants.

Head to the top of Brisbane’s iconic mountain
5/40A 15-minute drive from the CBD, Mt Coot-tha offers walking trails, hidden waterfalls, picnic areas and panoramic views (visit at sunrise or sunset to see the city skyline bathed in a golden-pink hue). The 1600-hectare forest reserve is also home to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, where dazzling shows are projected in the Cosmic Skydome theatre nearly every night.
Immerse yourself in science
6/40At futuristic digital gallery The Cube, 26 multi-touch screens spanning two storeys high create immersive journeys into topics as varied as dinosaurs, the Great Barrier Reef and the history of the Brisbane River. Part of the Queensland University of Technology’s city campus, the interactive learning space promotes science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) concepts but it’s so much fun, the kids won’t suspect it’s educational.
Relax Explore scenic hiking trails, savour find food and engage the kids in exciting STEM adventures on your next trip to Brisbane. Start planning your unforgettable getaway today.
Cruise along the Brisbane River
7/40Why travel by road when you can catch a ferry along Brissie’s iconic waterway? Stopping at eight popular inner-city spots between North Quay and New Farm, the CityHopper is a great way to sightsee. The cross-river journey on the modern KittyCat catamarans runs every 36 minutes between 5.30am and midnight, Sunday to Thursday, and operates later on Friday and Saturday nights. Did we mention it’s free?
Impress the kids
8/40Earning the title of “favourite grown-up of the year” is as simple as taking the kids to Bluey’s World, which is now open and will run until October 2025. Book tickets for this immersive experience at the Northshore Pavilion in Hamilton, about a 10-minute drive north of the CBD, where you’ll experience the best of the Queensland-based global-hit cartoon series in one epic 4000-square-metre space. Expect interactive games, full-scale episode location re-creations and the chance to meet our favourite family of blue heelers “in person”. Plus, you can arrive at Bluey’s World in proper Heeler-family style on one of the iconic Brisbane CityCats – dressed up in honour of Bluey and Bingo as CityDogs. Wackadoo!
Climb the Kangaroo Point Cliffs at twilight
9/40The heritage-listed volcanic cliffs hugging the Brisbane River are lit up at night for a climbing adventure with a difference. Tour operators, including Riverlife, will guide you to the top of the 25-metre vertical face (and back down again) over two hours – no experience necessary. You’ll enjoy twinkling Brisbane-city views and a huge sense of accomplishment.
Pamper yourself at an alfresco spa
10/40Soak Bathhouse takes self-care to new heights with its rooftop location in West End on the city fringe. Flit between the indoor and outdoor mineral baths, hot spas and cold plunge pools before sweating it out in the sauna and steam room or indulging in a full-body massage. The urban retreat is open until 10pm on weeknights (and midnight from Friday to Sunday), when the city lights become the glittering backdrop to a relaxing soak.
Relax and treat yourself to a luxurious pampering experience on your next Brisbane getaway. Book now.
See a cabaret show
11/40Part of the vibrant Northshore riverside precinct, The Pink Flamingo Spiegeland combines the glitter of Las Vegas with Paris’s sultry Moulin Rouge. The 360-seat circus-tent theatre hosts four different high-octane cabaret shows over seven weekly performances, with each one featuring extravagant costumes, nail-biting aerial stunts and an audacious sense of fun (there are cocktails, too).
Stroll across Brisbane’s newest bridge
12/40Due to open in mid-December, the car-free Kangaroo Point Bridge – which connects the inner-southern suburb of Kangaroo Point with the CBD – will be a destination unto itself, thanks to viewing platforms, abundant greenery and two dining options operated by the celebrated Tassis Group (responsible for some of the city’s top eateries, including Longwang and Opa Bar + Mezze). Upmarket Stilts restaurant will sit 10 metres above the river, while casual café Mulga Bill’s will serve woodfired pizza, steak and seafood in the urban plaza where the green bridge meets the City Botanic Gardens.
Turn the kids into mini scientists
13/40Fire up the imagination of children aged six to 13 with SparkLab’s 40 interactive exhibits demonstrating the wonder of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in the everyday world. Queensland Museum Kurilpa’s high-tech gallery gives kids a glimpse into solving design challenges via the hands-on Maker Space or they can watch wild experiments in the Science Bar.

Raise the roof in a new adventure dining experience
14/40At Vertigo, Australia’s first vertical dining experience, you’ll combine heart-pumping adrenaline with a decadent dinner. Guests ascend to the rooftop, don safety harnesses then climb out to tables and chairs suspended off the Brisbane Powerhouse museum’s façade. Legs dangling, diners contemplate the 17-metre drop with a calming glass of fizz followed by a three-course Italian feast by Bar Alto – mains include gnocchi with braised duck or brodetto of seafood and handmade bucatini in saffron bisque. Take one last sip of wine before making a truly dramatic exit: stepping off the building to be lowered by cable to the ground (exiting via the stairs is also an option).
Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city
15/40See what makes Brisbane tick at the City Hall clock tower. Free tours of the sandstone landmark, opened in 1930, begin with a ride in a vintage cage lift and a peek behind the enormous analogue clock face. Perched above it, the 76-metre-high observation deck offers lofty views over the city, reaching from South Bank all the way to Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

Stay at the hottest hotel
16/40If you visit Brisbane and don’t stay at The Calile, can you say that you’ve even been to the city? With its Palm Springs-style glamour, candy-coloured rooms and 28-metre Instagram-famous pool, this chic retreat is the place to be seen.. Located on buzzy James Street in Fortitude Valley, the 175-room oasis is set amid some of the city’s most popular eateries, including onsite Greek restaurant Hellenika and sleek trattoria Biànca in adjacent Ada Lane.
Dine on a school bus
17/40The whimsy of having a meal on a converted – and roving – school bus doesn’t distract from the polish of Da Biuso. The 12-seat fine-diner regularly changes its location (it’s currently parked at Bretts Wharf in Hamilton) but the dégustation menus are dependably delicious, no matter the surrounds. The cappelletti alla Norma with tomato-water reduction, cream of Parmigiano and eggplant dust, matched with wine from a list laden with small-batch Italian labels, is just one of the highlights.

Secure your spot at this restaurant
18/40Housed in a sunbathed, heritage-listed building in Fortitude Valley, minimalist Short Grain channels maximum energy via a menu brimming with vibrant, fragrant Thai and South Asian flavours. Dine in to sample Longrain maestro Martin Boetz’s palate-pleasing dishes (the duck-egg caramel custard tart with salted pork-fat pastry was an early highlight) or pluck a jar from the attached food store, which sells all the hits – including chilli jam and yellow soybean dressing. Be sure you leave room for a postprandial sweet treat – viral internet sensation Brooki Bakehouse and its chunky cookies are just 35 metres away.

Sip Martinis at a slick bar
19/40The Martinis at Midtown, an intimate South Brisbane venue, may evoke a Manhattan vibe but the food is all Brissie. Pull up a stool at the 20-seat bar, fashioned from a slab of spotted gum and order a signature Vesper (dry gin, vodka and Lillet Blanc) before deciding on dinner. Will it be a feast of Kilcoy eye fillet tartare or mini lobster croissants with hollandaise mayo? Two private dining spaces (cosy Uptown, for six to eight people, and the alfresco Downtown for larger groups) are also available.
Escape to Brisbane and enjoy expertly crafted cocktails in chic, stylish settings. Plan your getaway today.
Pair cocktails with the city's best views
20/40The hardy succulents and cacti silhouetted against city and river views may transport you to Mexico, but the menu at Sunsets Rooftop spans across the Mediterranean (forest mushroom bruschetta; marinated olives) to the United States (Moreton Bay bug roll; buttermilk fried chicken). Casa Paloma, a concoction of tequila, pink grapefruit, agave and lime, is one of several odes to Mexico on the cocktail list. While your tastebuds hop from country to country, the vista taking in The Valley, Queens Wharf and Woolloongabba from this whitewashed space high above Kangaroo Point is all Brisbane.

Discover a new neighbourhood
21/40Nothing says “up and coming” like craft breweries, a gin and vodka distillery and a WWII air-raid shelter repurposed as a café – historic inner-west suburb Milton has all this and more. First, order a caffeinated brew at Bunker Coffee. Later, try a Calm Spirits Co. gin at Warehouse 25, before tucking into one of the modern European dégustation menus at Deer Duck Bistro. Milton also boasts a weekly farmers’ market, a heritage trail and even a replica Eiffel Tower.
