Maylands Lodge – Hotel Review

Originally built in 1887 as the home of a wealthy Hobart businessman, Maylands Lodge has had many identities, from girls’ school to Salvation Army headquarters. Today, it’s been reimagined as a boutique hotel, opened in October 2018, offering 12 guestrooms and studios that blend elegant details of yesteryear, such as generous room dimensions, a grand staircase, ornate plasterwork and high sash windows, with contemporary features and amenities. Where is Maylands Lodge?

Maylands Lodge is in the suburb of New Town, 15 minutes from Hobart Airport and seven minutes north of the Hobart CBD. Head to the main street, New Town Road, for a choice of cafés and restaurants or take the nearby Brooker Highway to discover the surrounding region. 

What’s near Maylands Lodge?

Maylands Lodge’s relaxed atmosphere gives guests a chance to recharge their batteries, while also being only minutes to the CBD.  Within easy walking distance of the Royal Botanical Gardens, which leads to the various running or walking routes along Hobart’s waterfront, it's also a great leaping off spot to easily access nature trails in Wellington Park, about 35 minutes drive away at the base of Mount Wellington.

Room types

The lodge offers families the Hunter and Pearce two-bedroom studios, the first on the upper floor, with views of Mount Wellington, and the second on ground level, with garden access. Both are decorated in deep-blue, grey, white and dark-brown, with open-plan living areas and large bathrooms featuring walk-in showers and free-standing baths. The studios can accommodate up to four people, with king-sized or twin beds in the master and a loft-style bedroom or the lounge.

Restaurants 

Maylands Lodge previously had the excellent Deodara Restaurant on-site but there are no longer any dining facilities on-site. Staff now direct guests to nearby North Hobart cafes for meals. 

Travel for work

While Maylands Lodge is removed from the Hobart city centre, the hotel’s fast wi-fi, in-room desks and secure parking provide a secluded but convenient bolthole for the corporate traveller. The high-end onsite restaurant and comfortable modern lounge with honesty bar are ideal for business meetings or entertaining.

Sustainability

The property was renovated with sustainability in mind, right down to the smallest details. Guests will spot sustainably-made furniture in rooms, loose leaf tea instead of bagged options and locally-roasted coffee in place of pod-powered machines.

Accessibility

The property's Brownell rooms are DDA compliant, with levelled access from the carpark throughout the common areas of the hotel.
