If it feels geared to business travellers, you’re half right – the service is seamless, the hallways are quiet and the wi-fi is strong. The hotel’s fun side is still intact though, with the ever-famous Chocolate Hour; a daily spread for the “treat yourself” crowd, served every afternoon. And the namesake ice cream? Tucked behind a cluster of heritage buildings just off the CBD’s Elizabeth Street, Mövenpick Hotel Hobart occupies prime position in the heart of the city. (It’s about four blocks away from the Brooke Street Pier.) From here, you’ll be at the airport in around 20 minutes.

One block over is the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, a museum meets gallery meets herbarium (yes, truly!) and housed in a building that dates back to 1863. From here, it’s a quick six-minute stroll to Brooke Street Pier where the door-to-door ferry of the much-lauded Mona departs. In town on a weekend? Hit Farm Gate Markets, the locals’ answer to the ever-popular Salamanca Market, just two blocks north-east of the hotel.

Room types

Sharply decorated and crisply furnished, the contemporary rooms of charcoal grey and bright white have all the boxes ticked. Expect blackout curtains, pillow menus, take-home-worthy natural bathroom goodies and, in suites, incomprehensibly deep bathtubs. If views are your thing, go for Deluxe and above: that’s when windows stretch from floor-to-ceiling and capture sweeping harbour and city glimpses.

Restaurants

The treasures of Tesoro, the hotel’s on-site Italian-ish eatery, run from breakfast right through to dinner. In the morning, the menu is unabashedly indulgent (why yes, I would love to add fresh Tasmanian rock lobster to my sumac-sprinkled eggs benny), with a delicious cacao-nib strewn granola a highlight. At dinnertime, there’s a local twist to the classics: think Tasmanian truffle arancini and Cape Grim beef, seasoned with Tasman salt.

Travel for work

There are three smart meeting rooms, the largest accommodating up to 150 people. Wi-fi is free throughout the property and all rooms have a little table and comfy chair to double as an in-room workspace.
