QT Melbourne – Hotel Review

With striking architecture, eclectic interiors and vibrant artworks sprinkled throughout the property, the hotel boasts 188 rooms, but it is in the food and wine department that QT Melbourne, in the heart of the CBD, truly scores. Read on for the full review.

Where is QT Melbourne?

On Russell Street, sandwiched between Bourke and Little Collins in the centre of the city. It’s less than 100 metres from the nearest tram stop and about 25 minutes drive from Tullamarine Airport.

What’s near QT Melbourne?

The enchanting ACMI, a cavernous museum that delves deep into screen culture, is just 650 metres away (not far from the laneways that host the city’s best eateries, namely Chin Chin, Coda, Cumulus Inc...), while the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) is a good 15 minutes walk south. Hungry? Lively Chinatown is a mere three-minute walk away.

Room types

Having previously worked on QT Sydney, interiors designers Shelley Indyk and Nic Graham have reunited to create the hotel’s guestrooms and public spaces, which draw on inspiration from the 1920s rag traders that inhabited nearby Flinders Lane. The rooms have an industrial feel, with glossy concrete ceilings and black, pipe-like lighting and slick chevron parquetry flooring. Expect those beloved QT goodies: coffee pods, Kevin Murphy bathroom amenities, free movies and soothing Tippity Tea for evenings in.   

Restaurants and bars 

Taking full advantage of its proximity to the “Paris end” of Collins Street, the hotel’s flagship restaurant is the Pascale Bar & Grill, a European-style bistro with chic furnishings and an open kitchen. The on-site patissier also bakes treats that guests can savour in the lobby’s Cake Shop. If you prefer the city’s edgier, late-night scene, then laneway bar Hot Sauce is the place to be, blending banging beats with Korean and Japanese-inspired dishes. The Rooftop at QT aims to muscle in on local bar favourites promising “a voyeuristic outlook over Melbourne’s rooftops” — who doesn’t love a squiz of the surrounds from above? 

Travel for work

Solo business travellers will appreciate the Executive King, with a full-sized working space but if you’re meeting clients and colleagues in town, the QT’s meeting rooms are superb (and not at all stuffy). Some have huge floor-to-ceiling windows to the street and one is barside, depending on your needs. Wi-fi is free and plentiful throughout the hotel.

Gym

The fitness centre is small, lacking in natural light, and towelless, but will do the job if you’re dedicated.

Accessibility

There are nine rooms with wheelchair access.

What you need to know

The Japanese knife retailer and sharpener, Tanto, is a fun touch to the hotel's offering; definitely best browsed post-meal at Hot Sauce.
