Duxton Hotel Perth stands squarely on the corner of Adelaide Terrace and Victoria Avenue, just 300 metres from the edge of the Swan River. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the airport by car.

Elizabeth Quay, the city’s waterfront playground of walking trails, bike tracks and views of the Swan River, is a head-down-there-turn-left situation, about 15 minutes from your front door. 

WA Museum Boola Bardip, an amalgam of Indigenous, natural and cultural focus, is a wonderfully rich museum experience, spanning cretaceous fossils and illuminated art celebrating the six Nyoongar seasons. It’s a short walk  through the CBD.    

Room types

Rolling out a refurb means some guests will stay in the refreshed and soothingly subdued taupe and beige rooms and some will stay in the outdated versions. If you find yourself in the latter, try and book one with a river view. All rooms have free wi-fi, large desk spaces and in-room fridges, while Club rooms, perched on the top two floors, have the additional perks of complimentary cookies and bathrobes for maximum post-soaking comfort (yes, there’s a bath in this room type). For others, a tub can be requested but rest assured — the showers in non-bath rooms are huge.

Restaurants and bars

Firewater Grille is the hotel’s on-site eatery, attached to quirky The Bar, an open lounge where pre-dinner drinks are served. The former is where the buffet breakfast, is concentrated but it also transforms in the evenings to an a la carte diner with a surprisingly experimental menu for what moonlights as simply a “steakhouse”. (Torched Tasmanian Trout with Mustard Emulsion and Saffron Gel, as well as Exmouth Prawn Linguine, ain’t your average hotel dinner).

Travel for work

The full-size desks and ergonomic chairs are a welcome in-room touch for business travellers too often relegated to a sideboard. There are also a number of meeting rooms on-site for larger groups but the Club Lounge, accessible for those in namesake rooms, is a great place to spread out. Comfy couches, hot breakfasts, evening snacks and drinks are all part of the lounge’s warm hospitality.

Pool and gym

The modest outdoor pool is heated, in case you’re in town during winter. Gym bunnies will rejoice at the inclusion of Peloton bikes in the 24-hour fitness centre, but there’s also standard free weights and treadmills for the non-cyclists. 

What you need to know

A cluster of top-notch CBD wine bars are also wonderfully reachable by foot — the stalwart Balthazar, a near 25-year-old spot that’s practically an institution, is barely 10 minutes walk away.
