The Hoxton, Rome – Hotel Review

At a passing glance, it resembles a hip hangout – friends chatting over cocktails under Murano glass chandeliers and shoppers resting weary legs in mid-century chairs. Welcome to The Hoxton Rome, where all roads lead to relaxation in achingly stylish surroundings. Read on for the full review. 

From the 24-hour front desk, where staff are wearing jeans, T-shirts and ever-welcoming smiles, to the Margarita awaiting you in your room (just dial down to reception if you’d prefer yours on the rocks), it feels as though someone, somewhere, has anticipated your every whim and has already catered to it.

Where is The Hoxton Rome? 

The hotel is nestled within Parioli, an affluent enclave north of the city. Located 2.5km from Rome’s cultural (and occasionally chaotic) centre, the residential and business district is home to beautiful parks, galleries and charming shops, while also offering a welcome reprieve from densely packed tourist hotspots. This is a Roman Holiday fit for those keen to move among the locals. 

What’s near The Hoxton Rome?

Villa Borghese gardens, one of Rome’s largest and most picturesque parks, is just footsteps from The Hoxton and hosts more than 90 different attractions, including the Galleria Borghese. Taking the scenic route through the park, you’ll emerge roughly 40 minutes later at the Spanish Steps, one of the Eternal City’s most iconic landmarks. From here, it’s 10 minutes by foot to the Trevi Fountain. Or a taxi will take you from the hotel and to the fountain in under 10 minutes or to Vatican City in 15. Fiumicino international airport is about 40 minutes away by cab.  

Room types 

Ranging from a Shoebox (a single) through to a Biggy (a super-king with lounge), all five room options boast swoon-worthy parquet floors, playful pops of colour and the type of mid-century design accents those familiar with The Hoxton brand will have come to know and love (the retro phone and Roberts radio are particularly nice touches). In the bathroom, the design aesthetic is old-school Hollywood, with duck-egg blue and monochrome tiles complementing the antique brass fixtures beautifully. The Roomy and the Biggy both come with the option of booking a balcony or terrace, which will suit those keen to soak up the Italian ambiance and sunshine. What can you hear? Absolutely nothing, thanks to the soundproof glazing in all the rooms. 

Restaurants and bars 

When in Rome, eat… Mexican? The Beverly, so named after the Beverly Hills Hotel that used to occupy this piece of Roman real estate, continues to take their flavour inspiration from California, using a farm-to-fork ethos. Shredded achiote beef tacos appear on the menu like a mirage, while those looking for more traditional Italian fare will be pleasantly satiated with standout pasta dishes such as the Genovese octopus ragu. 

Breakfast at the Beverly is a feast of frothy macchiatos, energising fruit juices, smashed avocado on sourdough toast and freshly made pastries. For lunch, consider heading to Berberé for, arguably, the best pizza in Parioli. A leisurely 15-minute stroll is the only thing standing between you and artisanal sourdough pizzas favoured by the locals. 

Travel for work

With wi-fi free and fast throughout the hotel, you have the option to work from wherever you deign to perch your laptop. Aside from the Shoebox (as the name suggests, it’s a little snug), bedrooms feature spacious coffee tables which make an excellent makeshift desk. However, you might be more comfortable in Cugino, the all-day bistro where round-the-clock coffees and pastries will keep you ticking over until cocktail hour (of course, the danger is that the only thing you’ll then want to work on is Cugino’s curated cocktail list). Or you could take your Teams meeting out onto the terrace at the Beverly restaurant. 

For a more formal set-up, you might like to make use of the meeting rooms in L’Appartamento, a cavernous light-filled basement carved up into five different welcoming spaces, all of which centre around the communal pantry kitchen. You’ll find the pantry stocked with teas, fresh coffee, fruit and snacks by day, before becoming a private bar by night. For any printing needs, just email reception and let them do the rest. 

Spa and gym

While there isn’t a gym located within the hotel, The Hoxton Rome has partnered up with their favourite local fitness studios that can offer guests access for just €10 per session. 

What you need to know

Choose exactly when you would like to check in and out by opting for Flexy Time, available when booking at least 72 hours in advance. Fret not if you missed that window, though, as you can still extend your check-out time for just €10 per hour until 4pm.
