Travelling to Europe in 2025? You’ll Need to Apply for This New Visa
Europe has long been a playground for Australian travellers seeking varied landscapes, enchanting architecture and rich cultural experiences. In 2025, trips to the Continent will change, with one additional planning consideration – expected to launch mid-year, the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) requires Australian travellers to have an approved EES (Entry/Exit System) to enter certain countries in Europe. If you’re heading north this year, here’s everything you need to know about this new travel authorisation.
What is an EES?
The Entry/Exit System is a travel authorisation for Australians visiting any of the 29 European countries in the Schengen Area. For short-term stays in these countries – up to 90 days in a 180-day period – travellers will need to apply for this pre-approved travel authorisation before entering. The EES is likely to become obligatory by mid-2025 but no date has been finalised so it’s best to check during the planning of your European trip.
How does the EES work?
The EES isn’t a visa – it’s a way of registering short-stay travellers to Europe to help monitor immigration. Processed online, sometimes within minutes, it’s akin to giving customs officers some of your personal details in advance of your arrival.
When you arrive in Europe, your EES will be checked along with your passport so make sure you carry the same passport that you used during the application process. There won’t be a separate stamp or visa required, as the EES will be digitally linked to your travel documents. Custom officers will take digital fingerprints and a photo of your face when you arrive and these will be recorded in a digital file with your EES information.
How do I apply for an EES?
First, you’ll need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned return date from Europe. Then you’ll need to complete the application on the official European Union website. You’ll be asked to input details such as your name, date of birth, passport number and travel plans. It should take about 10 minutes to complete.
Is there a fee for an EES?
Once you’ve completed the application, you’ll be prompted to pay the €7 fee via credit or debit card. (A fee doesn’t apply to travellers under 18.)
Do I need an EES?
Australians travelling to Europe for tourism, business or short stays (under 90 days) in any of the Schengen Area countries will need to apply for an EES.
Destinations that require an EES are:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Italy
- Latvia
- Liechtenstein
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- The Netherlands
- Norway
- Poland
- Portugal
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Spain
- Sweden
- Switzerland
Countries that aren’t part of the Schengen Area, such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, won’t require an EES.
How long does an EES take to process?
Most applications will be processed within minutes, though it’s wise to allow up to four days for processing time. Once it’s been approved, it will be electronically linked to your passport.
How long is the EES valid for?
Once you have an approved EES, it’s valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. For frequent travellers to Europe, it means you won’t have to apply every time you go. As long as your trip is within the 90 days allowed under the Schengen visa-exemption rule, you’re covered.
