Climb up Anzac Hill (known also by its Indiginous name Untyeyetwelye) for views across the city, learn about the unique local fauna and flora at the Alice Springs Desert Park, cuddle up to a baby kangaroo at the Kangaroo Sanctuary, or visit the Flying Doctor Service and learn about this unique Australian medical institution through the magic of holograms.
For the seriously adventurous, why not head out to the Larapinta Trail - voted by National Geographic as one of the planet's top 20 treks? Following a 231 km path across the top of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs Telegraph Station to Mount Sonder, this is a trek unlike any other with spectacular stargazing and ancient gorges aplenty.
Bear in mind that the Larapinta Trail should only be attempted by experienced walkers if travelling outside of an organised tour, with walking not recommended in Summer due to the extreme daytime temperatures.
For those seeking a truly unique insight into the colourful character of Alice Springs, be sure to be in town in late August for the Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta - the only dry river boat race in the world.
