Few cities in the world offer quite as much variety and excitement as Tokyo, especially for the visitor. Over 400 years old with a population of 14 million, it's no wonder that there is a lot going on. While the list of Tokyo's must-see attractions is neverending, here are a few tips to get you started.

There are few better examples that capture Japan's relentless drive and modern energy than Shibuya Crossing. Although on paper just a street crossing, the sheer numbers of people using it make it the world's busiest intersection. Combined with the massive video screens and mesmerising geometrical lines, this is people watching at its best. Head up to the Shibuya Square tower for the ultimate bird's eye view.

With world-famous cuisine and literally thousands of small bars, clubs and restaurants, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice in Tokyo. Head down to Golden Gai (just near the Shinjuku shopping district) for tiny dive bars. Omoide Yokocho (a lane in Shinjuku) allows you to choose from up to 60 'hole-in-the-wall' restaurants where you can experience the concept of omakase, where you leave your meal in the hands of the chef.

The world's largest fish market, Tsukiji, is now in two separate locations, with each worth a visit. Watch the incredible sales process at Toyosu, or enjoy some excellent sushi at the street stalls on the original Tsukiji site.

In the heart of the world-famous Shinjuku area, Isetan is the most famous department store in Tokyo, with a history dating back to its 1886 origins as a kimono shop. Spread over 9 levels, there's a big focus on both local and international fashion.

On the hunt for antiques? Then be sure to check out the Oedo Antique Market near Tokyo Station. Held twice a month, this is THE place to come in Tokyo for one-off and unique wares. In a city not known for its antique shops, Oedo is the spot to find the perfect piece of history. One exception to the rule though is Shimokitazawa - the bohemian heart of Tokyo, where you can find some stunning second-hand clothing bargains.

Tokyo is full of excellent museums, temples, shrines and galleries that showcase the best of old and new Japan. The Edo-Tokyo Museum traces the 400 year old history of the city, while the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kiba show some extraordinary work across fashion, design and architecture. Art collective Teamlab's Borderless museum is a must-see, focusing on multi-sensory digital art, whereas the Yayoi Kusama Museum is devoted to the work of this legendary artist.

The old neighbourhood of Monzen-Nakacho(or simply Mon-Naka to those in the know) combines hipster bars with the beautiful Fukagawa Fududo Temple and Tomioka Hachiman Shrine. Head to Senso-ji to see Japan's second highest pagoda and immerse yourself in the incense-soaked atmosphere.

Learn the ancient art of Ikebana (flower arranging) with a class at the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, or visit Origami Kaikan to shop, admire the art of Origami, or learn to fold paper like a master at the origami workshop. For a truly Japanese experience, grab a ticket to the sumo wrestling at Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Want to escape the ultra urban vibe? Relax in nature with a stroll in the breathtaking 134 acre Yoyogi Park or Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a 144 acre park that was the former Imperial Garden - be sure to take a look (and a camera!) if you're there in cherry blossom season. The ultra cool neighbourhood of Nakameguro is also the perfect spot to photograph cherry blossoms over a canal, and find some gifts in the local boutiques.
