The best time of the year to go to Hervey Bay is for whale watching season, beginning in August through to October. Fraser Island essentially only has two seasons: summer and winter. Winter on the island is during the months of June through August with temperatures ranging between 13°C and 26°C. Summer on Hervey Bay is between December through February. The temperatures during this season range from approximately 22°C to 30°C. As its close to the Tropics of Capricorn it brings humidity that makes it feel hot. The subtropical weather means hot and humid summers and mild winters. The subtropical weather also brings this extreme rainfall.

Hervey Bay Airport (HVB) is the main airport for the city of Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia and the Fraser Coast region which incorporates the nearby city of Maryborough. The airport is located approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre.

Fraser Island can be reached via charter flight, ferry from River Heads and Rainbow Beach or through your Fraser Island accommodation provider. 

Getting around Hervey Bay

Central Hervey Bay is easily explored on foot, by bicycle or scooter. A regular public bus network services the city. The best way to explore the broader Fraser Coast region is with a hire car.
