When to visit

The best time to visit Milan is between April to May or September to October, with plenty of sunshine, festivals and outdoor dining to enjoy. September is fashion week and the city is very busy, so if traveling then its best to book well in advance. Temperatures between April and May are around 16°C to 21°C, making it a good time to visit the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. July and August are very hot, with temperatures around 32°C and most Milanese take their holiday, so some stores may be closed, though most major attractions are still open.

Arrival information

What is the main airport called?

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). It is the largest international airport in the Milan metropolitan area in northern Italy. It is one of two main international airports in Milan. The airport is located 49 kilometres northwest of central Milan, next to the Ticino river (dividing Lombardy and Piedmont). The airport has two terminals (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2).

Arriving in Milan

The welcoming staff at Milan Airport will greet you when you land to help with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are multiple transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Milan from Milan Airport

By train, car, taxi or bus, getting into Milan is really simple, depending on the transport means of your choice. From the airport you can easily hire a car or book a private airport transfer to get straight to your hotel for a relaxing start to your holiday. Taxi services are available at both terminals and located at arrivals on the ground floor, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes. The easiest way to get to central Milan is to take the airport express train, the trip takes around 30-50 minutes with trains leaving the airport every 20 minutes. The Malpensa Bus Express connects the airport with Milan’s central station, or you can take a coach shuttle service. Car sharing services are available to book from Milan Malpensa airport, for an easy way to get to your destination or explore further afield in Northern Italy.

Getting around Milan

Metro is the quickest way to get around the city, with four major lines connecting Duomo with Porta Venezia, the castle and other major attractions. Trams and buses are best for reaching areas in the south and northwest of the city and useful for sightseeing. It’s easy to rent a bike from a bike sharing service or rent a motorbike. Having a car in Milan is not easy as many of the streets have restricted parking. Taxis are available to hail, but your best chance is going to a designated rank outside train stations, hotels and in major piazzas. Milan has a train system and the main hubs are Porta Garibaldi and Cadorna. Walking is a good way to see the sights or you may wish to join a tour.
