When to visit

Hong Kong has a subtropical climate. The only predictable weather events that could have a significant impact on your travel plans are typhoons. Typhoon season begins in May and ends in November. The best time to visit is in autumn (September to November), there are lovely breezes, plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. The average temperature in autumn ranges from 25°C to 30°C. Spring (March to May) is also a nice time to visit, with cool evenings and some humidity. It's a good time to hike the Peak. Summer (July and August) are hot, humid and occasional thunderstorms, reaching above 31°C. It's the perfect time to shop in the glamorous air-conditioned malls, including IFC Centre in Central.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is Hong Kong's main airport, built on reclaimed land on the island of Chek Lap Kok. The airport is also referred to as Chek Lap Kok International Airport. The airport is approximately 40 km from central Hong Kong.

When your flight arrives in Hong Kong you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start. 

Getting into Hong Kong from Hong Kong Airport 

With a range of transport options available at the airport, travelling into central Hong Kong is easy. Choose from public transport, taxi, car rental, airport transfer, ferry or bus. The fastest way to get to the city is the Airport Express, a dedicated high-speed rail link as part of the MRT rapid transit network. It takes approximately 24 minutes, with trains running every 15-30 minutes and a comfortable way to travel. Hong Kong International Airport is well served by public bus routes. The buses provide a convenient but relatively inexpensive transport option. Taxis offer a door to door service to and from the airport. You can catch a taxi at the taxi station, located near the left-hand ramp outside the arrivals hall. Hong Kong taxis are colour-coded according to their operating areas. Urban taxis are red and operate in most areas on Hong Kong, New Territories taxis are green, while blue operate only on Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok. If you are staying at a major hotel, the coach hotel can take you to your hotel. Direct ferry services are available from the airport to various destinations throughout the Pearl River Delta via Skypier. It's easy to book an Uber or limousine for a private way to travel.

Getting around Hong Kong

There are plenty of ways to get around Hong Kong, whether it’s by taxi, ferry, rail, bus or tram. The city has one of the world's safest, most efficient and frequent public transport systems. Getting around Hong Kong couldn't be easier with the quick and efficient Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system. This covers all major districts in the territory, including stops at the boundary with Mainland China. The MTR also operates a light rail system that runs between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun in the New Territories, plus an inter-city train service to Mainland China. Buses in Hong Kong are plentiful, comfortable and air-conditioned. Especially popular are the double-deckers that offer great views of the surrounding city from the top deck. For both train and bus, you need to get an Octopus card to tap for payment onboard. Red and green minivans are small buses that operate throughout Hong Kong, as well as historic street trams for another way to travel. Taxis are plentiful throughout Hong Kong. They can usually be hailed on the street, are metered, cheap and air conditioned. Red taxis operate throughout most of Hong Kong, green taxis only service the New Territories and blue taxis only operate on Lantau Island. Hong Kong regularly operates ferry routes that connect Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the Outlying Islands. Alternatively, you may wish to take an Uber, join a tour, get on the hop on-off bus or walk around the city.
