When to visit

For fewer crowds and great weather, the best time to visit Madrid is in the spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). Temperatures are pleasant averaging around 16°C to 22°C. During spring the festival season begins with Holy Week and during autumn the weather makes for the perfect time to enjoy the city's rooftop bars and outdoor terraces. Summer (July and August) is particularly hot and the city is quiet as many locals head to nearby beaches. Some of the restaurants close and museums have reduced hours, though it’s a busy time for tourists. Temperatures in summer range from 25°C to 30°C.

Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). It is the main international airport, located on the northeast of Madrid, Barajas district, only 12 km from Madrid city centre, Spain.

When your flight arrives in Madrid, you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start. 

Getting into Madrid from Madrid Airport  

Getting into Madrid is easy, with a range of transport options to suit your needs. The airport is close to the city, making it a quick trip to get to your destination. Choose from public transport, taxi, Uber, hotel shuttle, private transfer or car rental. Taking the train from Madrid airport to the city centre is a good option with trains running every 15 to 20 minutes. The train station is on terminal 4,  floor 1 and is called Aeropuerto T4. Take the C1 and C10 lines to the city centre and beyond. Madrid's metro system services the airport on Line 8, stopping at all terminals and ending in the Nuevos Ministerios station in the centre of Madrid. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the city. Urban and city buses are a cheap way to get into the city and many destinations in Madrid. Take the express Line 203 to get into town in about 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. Airport taxis are white with a red strip on them, or you may wish to request an Uber through the app, which is a good option especially if you don’t speak Spanish. It's possible to rent a car located in terminal 4, which is a great option for visitors who want to explore Madrid and its surroundings. Alternatively, you may wish to organise a hotel shuttle or private transfer.

Getting around Madrid

Getting around Madrid is hassle-free with plenty of transport options to choose from. With over 300 metro stations, getting to where you want to go is easy. Madrid runs an efficient bus service that allows you to take in the city sights as you travel to your destination, alternatively you can take a suburban train that connects Madrid with other towns and villages in the region. When using public transport in Madrid, be sure to get a Madrid Tourist Travel Pass, which allows you to travel on any Metro, bus or suburban train, all included in the price of 5 euros, making it a great way to save money on public transport. The city has plenty of taxis or you may wish to request an Uber through the app if you don’t speak Spanish. Hiring a bike is an eco-friendly way to explore the city, or you may choose to rent a car or use the car sharing service.
