When to visit

Whichever time of year you choose to visit Portland, there’s always something new to see, do, taste and experience in The Rose City. Explore the changing colours of autumn, the gorgeous blooms of spring, the endless festivals of winter and outdoor adventure galore of summer. The best time to visit Portland is in summer (June through to August) with warm, sunny days and an average temperature around 25°C. The evenings are long, as the sun doesn’t set till around 9pm, making the long days great for hikes, taking a dip in the Willamette River and join in the Oregon Brewers Festival. During autumn, as the trees change colour and the weather cools, Portland’s calendar fills with cultural events, wine and culinary scene. Temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C.

Portland International Airport (PDX). It is the largest airport in the U.S. state of Oregon and located 19 km northeast of downtown Portland.

Arriving in Portland

The staff at Portland Airport will greet you when you land and assist with your needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Portland from Portland Airport 

Getting into Portland from the airport is easy with various transport options available. Choose from public transport, taxis, app-based ride services, shuttles, limos or rental cars. Public transport is an affordable and convenient choice and the Trimet Max/Light Rail can be found on the main level, at the south end of the ticket lobby beyond the Starbucks. The Red Line services PDX and trains depart every 15 minutes. Shuttles at PDX can be found on the lower roadway, outside of baggage claim with the option of hotel shuttles, Oregon express shuttle or charter buses. App based ride share services are a handy way to get to your destination and use the Uber or Lyft apps to request your ride. Follow signs to baggage claim, make sure you are on the lower level to pick up your ride. Taxis, limos and rental cars are available, outside baggage claim for convenient way to travel to your destination. It takes between 20 to 40 minutes to get to the city centre from the airport by car.

Getting around Portland

Efficient public transport, bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly city streets make navigating Portland a breeze. Renting a car is never a necessity in Portland, with plenty of other ways to explore the city car-free and avoid the hassle of finding parking. Public transport which includes a bus service, the MAX light rail and streetcar are the best ways to get around Portland. The bus system covers the city and its suburbs thoroughly with buses running every 15 minutes. The MAX light rail has over 90 stations through the city, making it a handy way to get around the metro area and downtown. The Portland Streetcar is a fun way to get around and goes through the Pearl District, a popular shopping and dining area. The City of Roses has many bike lanes and plenty of places to rent bikes though the bike-share program. Other ways to move around are to rent an electric scooter, use ride-share services Lyft and Uber or rent a car if you wish to explore further than the city.
