When to visit

The best time to visit New Plymouth is during the summer months from January to March to make the most of the outdoor activities. With plenty of sunshine, the temperature is around 19˚C during the day, perfect to visit Pukekura Park. As the city is on the North Island, winter temperatures drop to 3˚C to 9˚C. It makes a good time to visit NZ’s best art gallery the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery or Puke Ariki museum.

New Plymouth Airport (NPL). The airport serves the city of New Plymouth, and the surrounding region of Taranaki. It is located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island and is 11 km from the city centre, on State Highway 3 north to Auckland.

Arriving in New Plymouth

The friendly staff at New Plymouth Airport will give you a warm greeting when you land and from there, getting into town is quick and easy.

Getting into New Plymouth from New Plymouth airport 

With a range of convenient parking and transport options, getting to the city is easy. Rental car counters are available with all the main providers and best booked in advance.  Taxi and shuttle bus services are available to the city, it's only 11km to town from the airport taking around 15 minutes.

Getting around New Plymouth

With a range of things to do from stunning gardens and the New Plymouth Observatory, choosing how you travel around the city is simple with various transport options available. The citylink bus service runs around town, car rental and taxis are a convenient way to get you to where you want to go. There are spectacular walking tracks and it’s popular to hire a bike to get around.
