What is an authenticator app?

An authenticator app is a third-party app that links to one of your digital accounts, like your Qantas Frequent Flyer account and is used for logging in and passing two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Authenticator apps generate a unique six-digit code every 30 seconds that you can enter into a website or app to allow you to complete secure tasks like logging in, making payments, or accessing secure areas of your account.

When do I need two-factor authentication?

You will be prompted to pass two-factor authentication (2FA) within your Qantas Frequent Flyer account when:

Logging in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account on a new device (smartphone, tablet or computer) or a device is not recognised (for example, if you have cleared your browser cache or cookies).
Accessing personal information or payment details.
An extra layer of security is required, or we’ve detected unusual behaviour on the account.

Why should I use an authenticator app?

They’re more secure than SMS or email codes, linked to a specific device you own (like your smartphone), a digital account you own or both.

They work without a mobile network or internet connection, so if you don’t have service, you can still use your authenticator app.

Some authenticator apps keep your account in the cloud so you can access it across devices and can be set up easily if you switch devices.

How do I use an authenticator app to access my Qantas Frequent Flyer account?

Authenticator apps are a secure way to access your Qantas Frequent Flyer account without requiring an SMS or an internet connection to the app. You can set one up in your Profile

When prompted as part of log in and authentication, you will be presented with a page to input a six-digit code from your authenticator app. When this happens, simply open your authenticator app and copy the code associated with your Qantas Frequent Flyer account into the page to authenticate.

How do I set up an authenticator app?

There are many authenticator apps available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and many password manager apps can also be used as authenticator apps. Any of these will work with your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. If you don’t already use an authenticator app, you can download Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator (or any other one you prefer) from your mobile device’s app store.

Depending on the specific authenticator app you’re using, setup and linking can look slightly different, however, they will all follow these basic steps.

Go to My account > My profile > Personal information > Authenticator app - to access the Personal information page or any pages within your Personal information, you will need to pass two-factor authentication (2FA). If you don't have an authenticator app, you'll receive an SMS message or email code to pass.
Open your authenticator app and select ‘+’ or ‘Add a code’.
Scan the QR code or copy and paste the text code from your Qantas Frequent Flyer account into your authenticator app and follow the instructions.
Your authenticator app will generate a unique six-digit code every 30 seconds.
To complete linking, enter the code generated into the appropriate field in your Qantas Frequent Flyer account and hit next.

Once successful, your authenticator app is set up and linked. You may be asked to use the code generated by your authenticator app to log in, pass 2FA, or access secure areas of your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Go to My account > My Profile > Personal information > Authenticator app. To access the Personal information page or any pages within your Personal information, you'll need to pass two-factor authentication (2FA). If you don't have an authenticator app, you will receive an SMS message or email code to pass.
Select unlink
Follow the instructions.

Note: If you unlink your authenticator app, you won't be able to use it to pass two-factor authentication to access your Qantas Frequent Flyer account. You will be prompted with an SMS, email (where applicable) or security questions (if you have them set up). Please ensure the mobile number and email address in your profile are correct.
