Additional Baggage
Learn about additional baggage amounts, charges and offers to help you save.
Even though we offer generous checked baggage allowances, we understand that sometimes you might need to bring a bit more with you.
When travelling on a Qantas operated flight, you can pre-purchase additional baggage online using Qantas Points or cash when booking your flight, or through Manage Booking up to three hours before your flight departs.
Airport excess baggage and/or heavy charges will apply if your checked baggage at the airport exceeds your included allowance, Frequent Flyer tier allowance and any pre-purchased additional baggage.
Pre-purchase additional baggage
You can pre-purchase additional baggage via Manage Booking. To get started, enter your booking reference and last name.
Additional baggage amounts
The amount and cost of additional baggage purchased online depends on where you're flying to, your Qantas Frequent Flyer tier and the cabin you're travelling in.
No single piece of baggage can exceed 32kgs [70lb], and any piece over 23kgs (50lbs) may incur a heavy charge at the airport.
Fees for eligible routes are displayed when pre-purchasing additional baggage.
Note:
- Carriage of excess and pre-purchased additional baggage is subject to space being available on the aircraft.
- When travelling on a Qantas codeshare flight, or if your ticket includes travel with another airline, check with the operating carrier if you're eligible to pre-purchase additional baggage.
- If we're unable to identify if your ticket has been issued with included checked baggage by weight (kg) or by piece, any pre-purchased additional baggage will only be available to purchase by weight. This may occur with some third-party supplier issued tickets.
Australian domestic flights
Up to five additional pieces may be pre-purchased before you travel. The maximum weight of each piece depends on your cabin of travel and Frequent Flyer tier, which is up to the same amount as your checked baggage allowance
International flights - North and South America
Up to five additional pieces may be pre-purchased before you travel, at 32kg (70lbs) per piece.
International flights - excluding North and South America
Up to 100kgs of additional baggage may be pre-purchased before you travel, and is available in increments of 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 25kg or 35kg.
Airport excess charges
Excess baggage charges apply at the airport for any baggage exceeding the total amount of your included checked baggage allowance, Frequent Flyer tier allowance and any pre-purchased additional baggage.
The following charges are for Qantas operated flights and vary depending on your destination.
Note: carriage of excess and pre-purchased additional baggage is subject to space being available on the aircraft.
Excess baggage fees and heavy charges
Depending on your destination, excess baggage is measured by either the number of pieces or the total weight of your baggage. You'll be charged an excess baggage fee if you exceed your total allowance.
A heavy charge will also apply at the airport for any single piece of baggage that exceeds the weight specified in your checked baggage allowance.
