Places to stay
Barcaldine is the largest town in the Barcaldine Regional Council area, with an interesting and famous history. There’s a range of welcoming places to stay from country style motels, lodges and family run inns. If you enjoy a pub-style stay, there are a couple of hotels in town – a perfect way to find out more about the area from the warm-friendly locals. For a great outdoor experience, camp at the nearby Lara Wetlands, twenty minutes’ drive from town where you can spend a day relaxing under shady trees and watching the wildlife pass by.
If you’re visiting through town on a self-drive 4 wheel drive tour, you might like to rest and refuel at an Airbnb or bed and breakfast. Pop into the visitor information centre in the old Globe Hotel and let them help you prepare for your onward trip, and gather local knowledge about road conditions, food and fuel supplies. This small country town has a friendly community spirt and looks forward to welcoming you.
Things to do
The best place to start your adventure in Barcaldine is to walk the award-winning Between the Bougainvilleas Heritage Trail - past historical sites and displays of stories, interesting facts and original photographs. You won’t miss the towering Tree of Knowledge as you walk through town, with the cathedral-like sculpture taking pride of place on the main street. This was the site of the historic 1891 shearers’ strike - the original eucalyptus tree was poisoned in 2006 and a memorial was built around the site and unveiled in 2009, offering a great light display at night.
Refuel for lunch at one of the bakeries on the main street, or at Ridgee Didge Cafe which serves an indigenous coffee blend - before learning even more about life in the outback with a visit to the Barcaldine and District Folk Museum and The Australian Workers Heritage Cottage.
End your day with a movie at the historic Barcaldine Radio Theatre. Sample your favourite brew at each of the five pubs lining Oak Street, or enjoy a meal at one of the pubs or restaurants in town.
