Places to stay

For a central base, opt for a downtown hotel within easy walking distance to the Longreach Railway Station, shops and cafes. You'll have a convenient base for exploring Longreach and its hero attractions including the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum. Groups or travellers passing through on a self-drive holiday may wish to rest at one of the holiday parks or campgrounds in town. Friendly and knowledgeable locals will be delighted to provide helpful local tourism information.

Things to do

The Longreach region is a history buff’s dream. Explore museums and hear stories from Australia’s pioneering past or hit the road and experience the remote wonders of Outback Queensland.

Step back in time at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and learn about the history of some of the country's greatest explorers, Indigenous Australians and stock-workers. Don’t miss the live Outback Stockman’s Show, which tells the story of stockmen and women working on the land.

Continue your walk back in time with Outback Pioneers - gallop on a Cobb & Co stagecoach, watch an old-time movie in the station store's cinema and be sure to catch the famous Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show.

If you have more time up your sleeve, a drive west will take you to Lily Lagoon - a lily-filled waterhole on the Thomson River system perfect for bird-watching or a relaxing walk. The lake emerges temporarily, and usually after flooding, so check with the Visitor Information Centre in town  before making the four-hour drive.
