Neighbour Free gives you more space to relax in Economy. When you reserve Neighbour Free, the seat next to you remains free throughout your flight. 

About Neighbour Free

Neighbour Free offers you the opportunity to reserve the seat next to you, so you can enjoy extra space and comfort when travelling in Economy. If eligible, you'll be sent an email invitation to reserve a Neighbour Free seat from 48 hours before your scheduled flight departure. Neighbour Free can be reserved up to 1 hour before departure for domestic flights and up to 2 hours before departure for international flights. Neighbour Free seats are subject to availability and may need to be changed for operational, safety or security reasons, even after boarding the aircraft.  

Neighbour Free is currently available on majority of Qantas operated Australian domestic flights and International flights.

How does it work?

Receive invitation

If eligible for Neighbour Free, within 48 hours of your scheduled flight departure, you may receive an email invitation to reserve your Neighbour Free seat. 

Reserve your seat
  1. Select your Standard seat followed by your Neighbour Free seat.
  2. Provide your payment details and submit your request.
  3. We'll email you confirming your reservation. If we’re unable to secure your reservation, you will receive a full refund for the Neighbour Free portion of your flight. 
At the airport

Your Standard seat and Neighbour Free reservation will be available on our boarding pass. There is nothing further you need to do. 

What does it look like?

Using the seat map, you can reselect your Standard seat and your adjacent seat to make it Neighbour Free. This diagram represents a three seat configuration when selecting Neighbour Free for one or two passengers or simply selecting your seat.

Neighbour Free is offered on the majority of Qantas-operated domestic and international flights. There are multiple ways you can reserve a Neighbour Free seat within 48 hours of your scheduled flight departure:

  • Visit Manage Booking via qantas.com
  • Visit the Neighbour Free webpage
  • You may also receive an email if Neighbour Free is available on your flight

Regardless of the number of travelling passengers in your booking, only one Neighbour Free reservation request can be made for each segment.

Neighbour Free reservations commence processing within 48 hours prior to your scheduled flight departure. We'll email you to confirm your reservation. If your Neighbour Free Seat is unavailable you will receive a full refund for the Neighbour Free portion of your flight.

Note: your nominated payment card will be charged immediately upon the reservation.

 

Seats that have been purchased as Neighbour Free will be shown as reserved on the seat map at the time of purchase. There is nothing further you need to do. Neighbour Free cannot be guaranteed as seats may need to be changed for operational, safety or security reasons, even after boarding the aircraft

Once confirmed, if you cancel a confirmed Neighbour Free reservation, or fail to board a flight which is a Neighbour Free seat has been confirmed (no-show), you will forfeit the Neighbour Free reservation. This includes any cash used to purchase the Neighbour Free reservation.

No, your Neighbour Free reservation will not be transferred to your new flight. You’ll automatically be refunded and we’ll email you confirming the Neighbour Free portion has been refunded to your original form of payment. Please allow up to two weeks for funds to appear in your account.

If you’re eligible for a refund and haven’t received an email from us within two hours of your flight departure, you can submit a refund request via the online refund form  We’ll action your request within three to five business days, and email you advising your refund has been processed to your original form of payment. 

You can make one Neighbour Free reservation for each segment of your booking, if eligible, regardless of the number of travelling passengers in your booking.

No. Neighbour Free can only be reserved using an eligible credit or debit card.

 

A Neighbour Free seat reserves the seat space next to you only and does not include any additional baggage or meal allowances during the flight. Please refer to your original booking confirmation for baggage and meal allowances.

The seat next to you cannot be guaranteed as Neighbour Free, as seats may need to be used for operational, safety or security reasons, even after boarding the aircraft. However, all effort will made to fulfill your reservation or to provide you with a reasonable alternative.

All efforts will be made to fulfill your reservation. If we are unable to provide you with a reasonable alternative, you’ll automatically be refunded and we’ll email you confirming your refund to your original form of payment for the Neighbour Free portion. Please allow two weeks for funds to appear in your account. 

Neighbour Free refers to the seat space only and cannot be used for infant seating or to place items such as carry-on baggage, or musical instruments

If we cannot fulfill your Neighbour Free reservation, you’ll automatically be refunded the amount paid for the Neighbour Free portion.

If you’re eligible for a refund and haven’t received an email from us within two hours of your flight departure, you can submit a refund request via the online refund form We’ll action your request within three to five business days, and email you advising your refund has been processed to your original form of payment. It may take up to two weeks for the funds to appear in your account.

No, Qantas Points and Status Credits will not be earned on Neighbour Free reservations.

If eligible, you'll be sent an email invitation to reserve a Neighbour Free seat from 48 hours before your scheduled flight departure. Neighbour Free can be reserved up to 1 hour before departure for domestic flights and up to 2 hours before departure for international flights.

You can also check if you’re eligible to request a Neighbour Free Seat by visiting Manage Booking via Qantas.com, or on the Neighbour Free webpage within 48 hours of your scheduled flight departure.

You will receive a confirmation between 48 hours and 1 hour prior to the scheduled flight departure time, advising you whether your Neighbour Free reservation is available or not.

Neighbour Free is available on the majority of Qantas operated domestic flights and selected international flights.

Unfortunately, you cannot change a Neighbour Free reservation.

No. All offers are inclusive of change fees, ticket taxes and surcharges.

No, Neighbour Free is only available when travelling in Economy.

Yes, if you purchased a sale fare you are still eligible for Neighbour Free, if available on your flight.

You will be refunded the portion used to reserve Neighbour Free when:

  • if prior to departure, a seat change is made by Qantas or the customer, to a segment on which an associated Neighbour Free reservation has been confirmed;
  • if the segment in the original booking is cancelled by Qantas or;
  • under certain circumstances including under the Australian Consumer Law.

Refunds will automatically be processed when your reservation is no longer available, or at least two hours after the departure of the flight. A confirmation email will be sent to the nominated email address of the Original Booking confirming the refund to the original form of payment. Allow two weeks for funds to appear in your account.

If you’re eligible for a refund and haven’t received confirmation of your refund, refund requests can be lodged at qantas.com:

  • after the flight in the Original Booking has departed or has been cancelled;
  • no later than twelve months after departure of the flight in the Original Booking; or
  • twelve months from the date of the Original Booking.

Refund requests lodged at qantas.com will be actioned within three to five business days and we’ll email you confirming your refund has been processed to your original form of payment. Allow two weeks for funds to appear in your account.

Refunds will be processed in the currency in which payment for the Neighbour Free reservation was made and to the Nominated Payment Card used to make the payment.

Neighbour Free Terms and Conditions including refunds, are independent of Seat selection and fare refund conditions.

Neighbour Free may be offered to customers travelling in Economy on most Qantas operated domestic flights and international flights. Eligible customers will receive an invitation email to purchase Neighbour Free, reserving the seat next to their standard seat, for a cost, on their eligible flight. They can also check their eligibility via the Qantas Neighbour Free Seating webpage. Neighbour Free refers to the personal seat space only and doesn’t include any additional baggage allowances and cannot be used for infant seating or to place items such as carry-on baggage or musical instruments. The amount for Neighbour Free is separate and additional to the amount paid (if applicable) for seating in the original booking. Qantas Points cannot be earned on this seat type. Neighbour Free is available for purchase between 48 hours and up to 1 hour before domestic departure and up to 2 hours before international departure. Customers are responsible for ensuring that they have sufficient funds on their nominated payment card at the time of purchase.
