Operational and fleet efficiency

Modernising our fleet with new, more efficient aircraft is a key aspect of meeting our climate targets, as detailed in our Climate Action Plan (PDF).

We will do this by:

• Focusing on flying and engineering practices,

• Investing in fuel-efficient aircraft,

• Supporting broader airspace design and management initiatives requiring industry-wide collaboration, and

• Continuing to reduce fuel burn, including through smarter flight planning.

As the aviation industry transitions towards a net zero future, there is a strong need to explore new and innovative aircraft technologies. Airlines, industry, and manufacturers will need to work together on new technologies to ensure we can reach net zero by 2050.

The Group is investing significantly in fleet renewal. On average the Group will take delivery of a new aircraft every three weeks for the next few years. These aircraft will support sustainability through new technologies and aerodynamic improvements, and along with our operational procedures, will reduce emissions which would have otherwise been generated.

The new aircraft will help Qantas and Jetstar open up new routes and destinations.

While emissions on the ground are a relatively small part of our total emissions profile, we are seeking to further reduce our footprint. From the start of 2022, we have sourced large-scale generation certificates to cover 100% of the electricity consumption in all Qantas Group buildings throughout Australia.
