Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai, Thailand
This ornate, pearly temple only opened in 1997, but it’s quickly become a tourist attraction. It’s not, in fact, a consecrated temple but rather an art exhibit, created and owned by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the temple is thus far incomplete. It’s scheduled to be finished by 2070; by that time, the artist expects to have been awarded immortal life for his efforts, which he intends as an offering to Buddha.
