Château de Mirambeau, Charente-Maritime, France
Between Cognac and Bordeaux – so, prime wine country – this Renaissance pile was built over the remains of a medieval fortress. Surrounded by eight hectares of parklands, the castle has served variously as an orphanage, an army hospital and now, in its current incarnation, a luxury hotel with 40 guest rooms, a “cognathéque” cognac-tasting room and Turkish hammam.
