A stylish, understated respite from the busy surrounding streets, COMO Uma Canggu features breezy rooms, a relaxed beachfront bar and serene spa. This is a more refined taste of the old Canggu, when everyone seemed to be barefoot and fresh from a surf – or yoga – session. Read on for the full review.

When partygoers grow up, they stay at COMO Uma Canggu. They take their young family to the kids’ club, sip cocktails at COMO Beach Club and relax with a book, rather than a hangover, at the beach bar pool. It’s all very chill at COMO but there are plenty of bars and clubs within strolling distance if you’re hankering for the past.

Where is COMO Uma Canggu?

Turn off busy Pantai Batu Mejan and you’re within the serene bounds of COMO. (You won’t hear a peep of the revelry of La Brisa club, just across the road.) It’s about 40 minutes’ drive from Seminyak and an hour’s drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Traffic is notoriously jammed around here so always leave a little extra time if you’re tight on transit time.

What’s near COMO Uma Canggu?

You’re in the absolute thick of it. The Echo Beach shorefront, which COMO Beach Club straddles, is a people-watching paradise. Batu Bolong, the area’s main strip, is about five minutes away by taxi – but there are plenty of restaurants, yoga studios, boutiques and bars in between.

It’s all very surf chic at COMO Uma Canggu. There’s not a shell or cane lounger in sight – rooms here are the rattan-room-divider, low-slung lounger and blonde-wood-furniture kind of chic. In lagoon pool-oriented rooms, balconies catch stunning ocean breezes (and views) and the one-bedroom residences feel like a small, stylish apartment thanks to a kitchenette and spacious bathroom with enormous tub. Cotton robes, yoga mats and pod coffee machines await.

Restaurants and bars

From fresh juices in the morning to zesty cocktails in the evening, COMO Beach Club does double time (triple, if you count lunch) as the main on-site eatery. Stretching along the beachfront, it occupies absolute prime real estate in crowded Canggu. In the morning, it’s a small buffet of fruit, baskets of bottled juices and yummy yoghurt pots with an à la carte selection, while at lunch, it serves up hot-weather faves from fish tacos to Thai beef salads.

Glow Juice Bar, the chalk-white mini cafe also serves juices, pastries and excellent coffee.

Travel for work

There are workspaces inside but why sequester yourself when there’s sunshine to be enjoyed? Set up shop on your balcony dining table (if you’re in a residence or penthouse) or at COMO Beach Club, where the wi-fi is free.

Spa, gym and pool

The two pools at COMO speak to the crowd: the main pool sees families and quiet book readers at its edges, while the bar and beachside version attracts a trendy post-party contingent. The gym is connected to the spa and there’s a schedule of Pilates and yoga classes for guests to follow.

COMO Shambhala, the brand’s ever-famous spa brand, is next to the breezy lobby. The brand’s signature oil blends are here, too, as well as a dedicated mani-pedi room for beauty treatments.
