Canberra’s book-loving community has endured turbulent times in recent years with financial difficulties crippling the storied Smith’s Alternative Bookshop and forcing the closure of Electric Shadows Bookshop after decades. Fans of the hard-to-find are still getting lost among the shelves of Fyshwick’s labyrinthian Canty’s Bookshop but another glimmer of light has emerged towards Canberra’s south in Harry Hartog. Nestled among a line of fashion outlets in Woden’s Westfield shopping centre, Harry Hartog arrived in October 2014 with recent publications buttressed by a varied specialised collection. Amongst the familiar smell of bound pages you’ll find shelves dedicated to Canberra-based authors, second-hand curios and an extensive children’s section. It’s worth following Hartog’s social media posts to pencil in the shop’s regular author readings, creative writing competitions and more.
