Just a few minutes from Port Macquarie’s town centre, the lush Sea Acres National Park encompasses a rare swathe of coastal (or littoral) rainforest. The forest is accessed via a 1.3-kilometre-long elevated boardwalk that is wheelchair and stroller accessible and which passes a panoply of subtropical plant and tree species, once a valuable food source for the local Birpai people. The Rainforest Centre has interpretive displays on the region’s ancient Aboriginal heritage, an eco-gallery with local artworks and a splendid cafe presided over by French chef Jean-Louis Tostivint, where tasty pastries and creamy cakes are de rigueur.
