The Best Gelato in Sydney
Sydney is serving up some of the world’s finest gelato this side of Italy. Here’s our pick of the city’s best gelato bars, featuring authentic recipes as well as new flavours and unexpectedly delicious ingredients.
Bar Italia
Bar Italia is known for its generous scoop sizes, affordable prices and no-frills atmosphere. It’s been around since the 1950s on Sydney’s Italian epicenter, Norton Street, and locals swear it offers the city’s most authentic gelato. The Sicilian pistachio is to die for, while the Tiramisu will transport your mind and heart to the cobbled streets of Veneto.
169-171 Norton Street, Leichhardt
Anita Gelato
Decadence is key at Chippendale’s Anita Gelato, which hails all the way from Tel Aviv. With over 150 flavours (including pavlova, salted bagel and banana split), there is something for everyone, from classic creams to fruity frozen yoghurts. Not looking to compromise on flavour or health? The sugar-free, vegan chocolate gelato is the way to go.
Central Park, 28 Broadway, Chippendale
Sparrow Gelato & Espresso
Crows Nest’s Sparrow Gelato & Espresso goes beyond the standard gelato range with its list of inventive flavours, such as Kahlúa and honeycomb, pandan and coconut or gin and tonic. Treat yourself to a warm waffle stack, topped with gelato, for that extra sugar hit.
2 Ernest Place, Crows Nest
RivaReno Gelato
Crown Street’s RivaReno delivers on top quality creamy cones. Prepared on premise, the gelato reaches new heights of authenticity and taste with specialty flavours making for a unique experience. “Alice” is one of the most popular, and for good reason: rich mascarpone cream is combined with Italian port wine, Marsala Vergine Soleras and topped with indulgent melted Gianduja chocolate.
280 Crown Street, Darlinghurst

Pompei’s
Pompei’s has become a mainstay in Bondi’s trendy backstreets. The small, unassuming corner – dedicated to traditional Italian gelato and sorbet – is famed for its stracciatella, tiramisu and pure pistachio. All flavours are made with natural ingredients in their Bondi Beach lab.
126-130 Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach

N2 Extreme Gelato
Don’t be fooled this is no ordinary gelato. N2’s “gelatogastronomy” experts have devised a way of using liquid nitrogen to make exceptionally smooth gelato fresh to order. Head to Chinatown or Newtown and try pink lemonade sorbet or crème brûlée, but be warned – these vaporous desserts will leave you wanting more.
43/1 Dixon Street, Sydney
Cow and Moon
Forget Italy, Sydneysiders need only travel to Enmore to try the “best gelato” in the world. Taking out the title in Italy last year, Cow and Moon is internationally recognised for its almond affogato flavour, a base of Madagascan vanilla combined with caramelised Italian almonds and single origin coffee. Yes.
181 Enmore Road, Enmore
Gelato Messina
Gelato Messina was an instant hit in Sydney when it first launched in Darlinghurst in 2002. Since then, it has opened ten more stores, including the most recent at the Rozelle Tramsheds. The use of unique ingredients, a large range of flavours and a selection of highly photogenic cakes have made this gelato bar and its offerings an Instagram favourite. Try one of the innovative weekly specials, such as Robert Brownie Junior, or the most popular signature flavour, salted caramel and white chocolate.
