There’s a new Greek kid on the block. A few streets from Darwin’s CBD, Kalidonis Taverna could be straight off the island of Kalymnos, its huge roofed terrace edged by a low wall, its interior decked out with a ship’s wheel and diving helmet and its aromas of garlic and grilling meats. Apart from pizza, the menu offers no surprises. What is unexpected, pleasantly so, is the excellence of the food. The luscious tzatziki packs a powerful whack of fresh garlic, the lemon-drizzled grilled octopus is just so and the satin-
smooth skordalia perfectly partners golden discs of fried eggplant. And the mixed-grill platter? Check out that succulent housemade sausage, tender lamb chops and quality-over-quantity serve of skin-on chips that taste of – who would have thought? – potato. This new kid will soon have lots of friends.
