Maeve Wine – Restaurant Review
Spy the imposing copper doors and burgundy staircase on Grey Street and you have arrived at this beautiful heritage-listed wine bar and restaurant from chef Jesse Stevens and MoVida Aqui alumni Maris Cook and Eleanor Cappa.
Across the road from QPAC, Maeve is geared towards the theatre crowd, meaning you can eat and run either very early or very late. But you’re better off making a night of it at the bar, with Cappa on hand to pilot you through her internationally minded 110-bottle wine list, where Spanish albariño and hondarrabi zuri sit alongside Clare Valley riesling and Margaret River pet nat.
Stevens has finetuned the food to the vino, his selections ranging from steak tartare with horseradish cream and cured egg yolk to taramasalata with spanner crab, salmon caviar and witlof. The experience is capped off by the setting: the first floor of a 91-year-old former bank renovated to capture the spirit of a French bistro, with timber floors, a marble bar, fluted glass and pendant lighting.
39 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane; open Monday-Saturday for dinner.
