Learn to Surf on the Gold Coast
If you’ve always wanted to try surfing, or secretly suspected you might be a natural (or even a goofy), it seems only appropriate to give the sport a go while close to Surfers Paradise. The team at 1st Wave Surf School have been operating for more than 15 years and know their point break from their beach break (and also goofy from natural – that’s right foot versus left foot at the front of the board, in case you were wondering). The school provides all the equipment you need for the two-hour beginners’ group lessons; private sessions are also available on request for groups or families. A word of warning: despite the name of the area, surfing isn’t always paradise to the newcomer (it’s harder than it looks). It’s a smart idea to do your homework beforehand with 1st Wave’s online surf guide, which includes tips to help you get ahead before your lesson. 1st Wave also runs 1.5-hour introductory sessions to stand-up paddleboarding.
