A Day Trip to Bruny Island

If you get up early enough, Bruny Island is a great full day trip. The car ferry leaves from Kettering, only about 30 minutes south of Hobart, and the island’s relative isolation make it a driving trip of note. Start by turning off the main road to Dennes Point and have a coffee at the café. Head south, stopping at The Neck, to climb the stairs and check out the amazing view of the narrow isthmus that joins North and South Bruny. If you’ve got the time, drive to the stunning Cloudy Bay or head to Adventure Bay and walk the headland. Supplies are few and far between so it’s best to pack a lunch but there’s also a winery, a cheesery and a pub with good local food. Give yourself time to make it back for the last ferry or you’ll be stuck on the island overnight.
