Alabama Hotel

It’s not hard to appreciate the quirkiness of this tucked-away gem in the heart of the CBD. Its 17 rooms are decorated with flair, the bar at reception is a low-key hangout for guests and you’re just minutes’ walk to the best coffee and food (yes, Pilgrim and Franklin, we’re talking about you). The building is actually the original Alabama Hotel, which began life in 1867, with its art deco façade added in the 1930s. You will have to share a bathroom but the payoff is that you’re still staying somewhere with personality – and you’ll have quite a few more dollars to spend seeing the sights.
