Hobart’s Moss Hotel is a cosy cocoon on lively Salamanca Place. A pair of sandstone warehouses transformed into a variety of room types, from the Loft, high above the street, to the Grove Balcony, with its private eyrie, the property has a heritage feel to its carefully-curated interiors. The sophisticated guestrooms, some with exposed beams and original sandstone walls, come in combinations of black, dark-green, greys, blues and white, with modern artworks and handmade furniture. While there’s no on-site restaurant or bar but you’re encouraged to bring a drink from your minibar and relax in the central living space, with its inviting sofa and armchairs.

The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Hobart’s buzzing Salamanca Place, only metres from the harbourfront. An 18-minute drive from the airport, Moss is within walking distance of some of the city’s best restaurants, bars and cafés and the famous Saturday markets are on the doorstep.

Stationed astride Salamanca Market, Moss Hotel is close to the city’s wharf precinct (where you'll head if you’re off over the river Derwent to visit Mona) and the city’s many marketplaces, from the namesake Salamanca to the locally-favoured Farm Gate Market. If you’ve come for the fresh Tasmanian air, you can take a run along waterfront Castray Esplanade then through Parliament House Gardens, one of many running routes or get out on the water and hire a kayak for a tour of the historic harbourside precinct.

Moss has a variety of room styles. There’s the Bower, with queen-sized bed, exposed beams and sandstone walls, rainforest shower, Bose sound system and pub-priced minibar. The larger Grove rooms feature either a deep-soak bath or a private balcony. The bath option has black walls and dark-grey carpet, with faux-fur cushions on Mid-century-style armchairs, a king-sized bed with ceiling-high wooden bedhead and a luxurious dark-green tiled bathroom.
Restaurants and bars
Moss doesn’t have an onsite bar or restaurant but venturing out provides myriad choices for dining and drinks. Looking for a classic Tassie pub for burgers and beer? The Whaler, established in 1829, is at ground level at number 39 and is just one of the many eating options on Salamanca Place. For something more high-end, the Lounge by Frogmore Creek has a menu featuring local produce, such as wallaby striploin roast, matched with wines from the eponymous vineyard.
Travel for work
Its convenient location makes Moss a good choice for corporate travellers. Proximity to cafés, bars and eateries for business entertaining and fast in-house wi-fi and secure parking add to the hotel’s attraction. A co-working space in nearby Macquarie Street is available from $46 per week.
