This is one of Melbourne’s secrets hidden in plain sight. The permanent exhibitions at ACMI (the Australian Centre for the Moving Image) – often overshadowed by bigger touring collections – are fun and free. Screen Worlds is an interactive display with interesting objects and rarely seen footage that tells the history of the moving image, while Australian Mediatheque shows audio and video content from the ACMI vaults and National Film and Sound Archive. There are also cinemas showing cult, local and independent films and a great bar and cafe called Optic when it’s time to call “cut” or if you’ve got a meeting near Fed Square.
