When you need to get the day started, head to South Melbourne and this French patisserie and cafe. Far from your average breakfast – some granola here, a boiled egg there – the menu gives diners a new spin on all the classics. The spiced lamb jaffle has pine nuts, labneh and a fried egg, while the cod rarebit teams salted cod with poached eggs and red-pepper puree. A local supplier roasts the cafe’s ethically sourced, single-origin beans and the hot chocolate is made by combining Madagascar dark chocolate and organic panela cane sugar. When breakfast is done grab some of the delicate and utterly delicious petits gâteaux for later, when you’re hungry again.

Location

South Melbourne is just minutes by tram to the CBD but feels a bit like a village, with shops, cafes, yoga studios, art galleries and the South Melbourne Market. It’s also walking distance from Albert Park Lake, the home of Melbourne’s Formula One Grand Prix.
