There’s not much to remind you this was once a lovely, old-school pub – just the façade of the 1880s building. Inside it’s been gutted and architecturally redesigned to create a 15-room, full-service boutique hotel. Chic and clean-lined, the suites include modern amenities, custom-made furniture from local artisans and generous extras, from terrariums and fresh blooms to a Nespresso machine and Appelles Black Label bathroom amenities. Downstairs, the bar and restaurant is a destination in itself, with 18 beers on tap, a long whisky list and simple dishes including fish pie and confit duck, prepared from the best-quality ingredients. Or you can just head upstairs for a sundowner on the rooftop.

Location

South Melbourne is just minutes by tram to the CBD but feels a bit like a village, with shops, cafes, yoga studios, art galleries and the South Melbourne Market. It’s also walking distance from Albert Park Lake, the home of Melbourne’s Formula One Grand Prix.
