The style of this CBD mall extends beyond its many boutiques. The centre is built around the historic shot tower and it’s an impressive sight rising up to the soaring glass ceiling. At its base, you’ll find lanes of vendors selling from market-style stalls, while upstairs there’s a cinema and dining precinct. Australian design is well represented, with stores including Alannah Hill, Gorman, Sass & Bide, Mimco and retro-suiting specialists Antons all with their own shops. If you’ve finished the book you’re travelling with feel free to swap it at the Little Library and take an Unlocked Tour to discover the history of the building and venture into little-accessed spaces, like the roof.

Location

Sitting at the top end of the CBD, Melbourne Central is easily accessible via the busy tram-line artery of Swanston Street or its self-named rail station. The Queen Victoria Market, Old Melbourne Gaol and the popular suburb of Carlton are not too far from here.
