It still serves its original function as the place where fresh food is bought and sold but these days the South Melbourne Market is also where people meet and eat throughout the day. Ask any Melburnian and they’ll tell you its biggest claim to fame (and for good reason) is the South Melbourne Market dim sims but you can also chow down on fresh sushi, dumplings and gelato. Those with a nose for the next big thing should check out SO:ME Space, a showcase for young designers selling handcrafted and unique pieces. The market is open Wednesday and Friday to Sunday.

Location
South Melbourne is just minutes by tram to the CBD but feels a bit like a village, with shops, cafes, yoga studios and art galleries. It’s also walking distance from Albert Park Lake, the home of Melbourne’s Formula One Grand Prix.
