Alex Hotel – Hotel Review
Pitched at the discerning traveller whose holidaymaking is a modern blend of culture, food and wine, boutique Alex Hotel delivers the best of Perth right on your doorstep. Our advice? Grab one of the complimentary Lekker bikes and go exploring. Read on for the full review.
All of the property's 74 rooms employ a cool yet contemporary decorative punch, thanks to award-winning interior designers Arent & Pyke. The roof terrace is the indisputable highlight of the hotel but there’s also a mezzanine lounge and the chic Shadow Wine Bar & Dining Room, a cool drinking den behind a 1950s façade that feels like a neighbourhood spot.
Where is Alex Hotel?
The edge of the city is less than a 500-metre stroll away, across the Horseshoe Bridge at the end of William Street. It’s about 25 minutes by car to the airport.
What’s near Alex Hotel?
Northbridge is one of Perth’s most exciting urban locales. It’s the heart of the city’s cultural scene (the Art Gallery of WA, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the WA Museum Boola Bardip and State Theatre Centre of WA are all here) and you’ll also find a plethora of small bars and hip eateries.

Simple, uncluttered and functional, rooms are a little on the small side. There are other payoffs, though — all rooms except the Small have king beds with Italian linen, the rainwater showers are stocked with Sodashi products and some rooms have private balconies that overlook the neighbourhood.
Restaurants and bars
Shadow Wine Bar is a European-style bistro by way of WA, with a locavore’s approach to produce and an international attitude to the menu. (Think spaghettini sprinkled with prawns, bottarga and pickled chilli or veal cotoletta with endive and orange).
There’s also a clever little honesty bar on the mezzanine floor, which stocks goodies such as local craft beer and Margaret River wines in lieu of mini bars.
Travel for work
For a hotel with such thoughtful design, the lack of remote working amenities is stark. No room types have desk space (or even dining space that can be refashioned), so your best bet is to pull up a chair at the cafe downstairs. It’s not a hardship spending time there, admittedly: serving excellent locally roasted coffee and open from 6.30am every morning, it’s the perfect place to pull up a chair and dive into that inbox.
