In a city packed with flamboyant architecture, heaving bars, sprawling gardens and Michelin-Starred restaurants, one of the best things to do is surprisingly low-key. Take the funicular up to the top of the mountain, buy a greasy bag of churros and some dipping chocolate and sit in the midst of the beautifully kitsch Tibidabo Amusement Park watching Barcelona really come to life as the sky and sea turn purple.
This amusement park, named after the mountain it’s perched on, first opened in 1899 – three years before the beautiful church next to its gate, Sagrat Cor, even began construction. It is free of charge to wander around most of the park area and the best spot to be for sunset is the viewing area just beyond the double-decker carousel and the churros stand. A lot of the rides are old and basic and won’t really excite thrill-seekers but there is a big play area and some rides that smaller ones would enjoy. Its really more about the atmosphere and is a great family-friendly alternative to taking in the city view from the edgier Bunkers del Carmel.
Location
Look closely at Tibidabo mountain from the city and you’ll see the magnificent Sagrat Cor church perched near the top, showing you where the Tibidabo Amusement Park is located. It’s easy enough to get a taxi up, but not so easy getting one down, so public transport via the funicular and then trains or buses into the city centre are your best options for either one or both ways.
