Let’s Go Shopping in Edinburgh (It’s More Than Tartan)

Australian jewellery designer Tanja Kovacevic, founder of jewellery label Petite Grand, frequently visits Edinburgh to see family, so she knows all the Scottish capital’s retail secrets – and she’s willing to share.

Best for a designer splurge

“Multrees Walk off Andrews Square is a great luxury shopping destination with Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Coach stores. It’s all open-air and pedestrian-only – perfect for browsing.”

Best for streetwear

“Stop by Princes Street in the very heart of Edinburgh. On one side of the street are high-street labels including Topshop, Urban Outfitters and H&M. On the other side is a beautiful garden and the breathtaking Edinburgh Castle. It’s the perfect way to see the city.”

Best for vintage

“You can’t beat W. Armstrong & Son in the famous Grassmarket Square for the best vintage clothing and accessories. The bright-red façade is unmissable from the street, plus the staff members are avid vintage fans who can help you find that one-of-a-kind piece. The store has been there forever – it’s a must-see.”

Best for beauty

“The old-school Scottish department store Jenners has a wonderful selection of beauty brands such as The Ordinary, Niod and Guerlain, as well as some smaller UK beauty brands such as Pixi. The store is a bit of a labyrinth but well worth a visit.

On my last visit to Edinburgh, I also came across Penhaligon's perfumery – a delightful store where each perfume has its own story. My favourite scent is Halfeti with notes of bergamot, jasmine and rose.”

Best for homewares

“Stop by Anthropologie on George Street in the city for great homewares. The store has a great selection of dinnerware if you can pack it in your suitcase! And the linens, cushions and blankets are always really colourful and unique.”

Best for a souvenir

“Definitely The Royal Mile, the main street of the Old Town starting at Edinburgh Castle working its way down to Holyrood Palace. The street is covered in Scottish memorabilia and every second store is a souvenir shop. You can find famous Scottish whisky, bagpipes and absolutely everything your heart could desire in tartan. It's by far my favourite and the most fun shopping experience in Edinburgh.”
