Widely regarded as one of America’s best zoos, Zoo Miami is delightful enough to compensate for the approximately 50-kilometre drive from Miami Beach. Landscaped with lush, tropical plants, the grounds are shady and pleasant while the animal enclosures have the appearance of open habitats. Highlights include camel rides, a dramatic Indian-temple-themed tiger enclosure and stations where visitors can hand feed giraffe and rhinos. Non-animal attractions are also notable and the children’s playgrounds, including water-play areas with fountains and water cannons, are godsends for the weary parent. Be warned, however: the grounds are deceptively large and that family-sized pedal car that seemed like a good idea at the time may not seem that way at the end of a hot Miami day.

Location

Zoo Miami is located just outside South Miami Heights and right by the University of Miami South Campus. Going to the Zoo is very much a destination trip as there isn’t too much else out here for visitors, apart from neighbouring Gold Coast Railroad Museum.
