On-trend fashion retailer Dover Street Market, operated by the cult fashion brand Comme des Garçons, is less than two years old, but it already feels like a Manhattan staple. The seven-level store, once the home of Touro College and the New York School of Applied Design for Women, has been renovated with startling modern features such as an industrial glass elevator and rotating art installations.

Despite its slightly unexpected location near Murray Hill, it’s a suitably impressive backdrop for Designer Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons and other labels such as Prada, Alexander Wang and Thom Browne. After a dose of retail therapy, refuel on the ground floor Rose Bakery, famous for its delectable pastries and energizing drinks.
