The easiest way to explore Central Otago’s countryside is a trip to the historic town of Glenorchy – a 45-minute drive from Queenstown and the gateway to some of the South Island’s most famous film-shooting spots, including locations for The Chronicles of Narnia, Wolverine and, of course, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Fill your picnic basket with artisanal breads and cheeses at the Mediterranean Market (53 Robins Road, Boydtown) and top quality deli goods at Zamora – The Meat Preachers (3 Industrial Place). Make your way to the town via the Glenorchy-Queenstown Road with waterfront views of Lake Wakatipu and one fantastic stop: Bob’s Cove, where the whole family can enjoy a quick swim without a single tourist in sight.
