“How I Travel” With Model and Actress Charlee Fraser
The Australian First Nations model has made the leap into acting, with Hollywood film roles luring her to Los Angeles.
You’re spending more time in LA. Do you love it?
I do! I’ve always been a New York girlie but I moved to LA last year for work and I’m still discovering new areas. When you have a car, the whole city opens up to you.
Where are your favourite pockets?
Venice is amazing – close to the beach, with cool cafés and art. Los Feliz is great for getting out and walking among the trees and Silver Lake has funky little stores.
You must be a packing pro by now. Any tips?
You’d be surprised how much you can fit inside your shoes.
Anything you always pick up at the airport?
I buy plane snacks and plantain chips are a favourite. They’re addictive.
What else do you bring onboard?
A book, plus Hydralyte and Berocca – I pop one of each in a water bottle when I land.
What’s the last thing you read on a plane?
The Last Witch of Scotland by Philip Paris.
If you could only pack one pair of shoes…
I go barefoot if the destination is hot and beachy, otherwise my Nike M2K Tekno Summit sneakers.
Where do you stay in LA?
I have an apartment now but when I first arrived I stayed at the Sunset Tower on Sunset Boulevard. It’s glamorous, with an Old Hollywood vibe.
Any great food recommendations?
So many! My favourite brunch spot is an Aussie chain called Great White – you have to get the breakfast burrito. I’m mostly vegan so Café Gratitude in Venice Beach is another favourite. The best sandwiches in LA are at a café run by two reality TV stars called Something About Her in West Hollywood. For dinner, Mírate is a very cool Mexican place in Los Feliz.
And drinks?
I don’t drink alcohol but I’m into adaptogenic mushrooms. Anima Mundi in Venice Beach is a little garden café with mushroom teas and tonics.
First thing you do when you get off the plane?
A workout then a sauna and a 30-minute massage. Getting everything moving sets me up to get straight back into things.
