The Pop Culture Inspiring Actress Geraldine Viswanathan Right Now

Portrait of actress Geraldine Viswanathan

The Australian actress co-stars in You’re Cordially Invited with Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon on Amazon Prime this month. Here’s what’s keeping her occupied.

The last movie I saw…

Girls Will be Girls. It’s by an Indian filmmaker, Shuchi Talati, who’s now based in Brooklyn. It’s this wonderful coming-of-age story about a girl in a boarding school and the hard truths about being a woman, especially where the film is set. It’s very brave in its storytelling, which is subtly woven and powerful. I’m obsessed with it.

What I’m watching…

The honest truth is I’ve been watching Sex and the City for the first time. I think it’s essential viewing for young women. Being single and living in the city – I go between the East and West coasts in the United States – it really does hit you differently. I love that it’s centred on female friendship, which is the constant in their lives. I’ve been bingeing it and am about to finish the last season.

My favourite podcast is…

Las Culturistas, with Bowen Yang from Saturday Night Live and his best friend, Matt Rogers, who’s also a comedic actor. They’re so funny, it feels like you’re talking to a friend. My favourite episodes are when they have their comedian friends on. It’s a dream of mine to go on the show.

The Instagram account I follow …

Velvet Coke. It’s an archive of pop-culture moments from the 1990s and the Noughties and is really fun. I’m always learning about things I missed because I wasn’t alive. There’ll be a compilation of all the times Hilary Duff ran into her bedroom crying in a movie or music videos with dance breaks in them, all of which I’m happy to see.
