In the Air with… Pia Miller
As the new Australian ambassador for GHD, Pia Miller knows a thing or two about keeping her hair perfectly styled for landing.
Pia Miller is possessed of natural beauty and a head of glossy, luxuriant hair that makes the Chilean-born model and actress the perfect choice for GHD’s first Australian ambassador. Discovered at the age of 14 in the same Dolly magazine Model Search that produced Miranda Kerr, Miller now sizzles on our screens playing Katarina “Kat” Chapman on Home and Away. Here, she shares with us what makes the cut for her carry-on and how she combats post-flight “air hair”.
How often do you travel?
I travel quite a lot. Being from Melbourne and now living in Sydney I make sure I get back home once a month. So that’s at least 12 interstate trips a year. I have a pretty busy filming schedule but I try to squeeze in one overseas holiday, too. This year I went to Bali in July during our production break, which was heaven. If I can, I also try for a quick trip to Los Angeles to catch up with a lot of my friends who live over there.
How do you prepare for a flight?
I’m always rushing from set or home so I try to organise myself a couple of days ahead of time. I have a go-to list and pack my bags based on this but change it slightly depending on where I’m headed.
What do you have in your carry on?
A sweater for when it’s cold, a couple of books and a magazine – if I’m on a production break there will no doubt be a script in there, too. My phone, headphones, a hat and likely some bits and pieces for the kids [Miller’s children Isaiah and Lennox are 13 and nine].
What hair tools do you always travel with?
My GHD Aura hairdryer because it’s slightly lighter than regular hairdryers and easy to pack. I also throw in a few styling products and a paddle brush and I’m set.
How do you stay comfortable on a flight?
My outfit choices are always based on comfort. So some jeans, an oversized tee, sneakers and a sweater is perfect for me. I also like to pack some face mist, moisturiser and a bottle of water for long-haul flights to stay hydrated. There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable on a flight so you need to be prepared as best you can.
What’s the easiest way to revitalise your hair when you’re travelling?
Personally, I think there’s nothing better than washing and styling your hair on the day of your flight, so regardless of where you are going, it’s likely to be in good nick when you land. I take some dry shampoo for long-haul flights to freshen up and I always spritz GHD Final Shine Spray in my hair before landing to feel fresh.
What's the most memorable place you've ever travelled to?
Probably Chile. It was absolutely incredible to return home. I hadn’t been back since I left at the age of eight. It brought back a lot of memories and emotions – it’s such a beautiful place and I look forward to returning again soon.
Where are you off to next?
Next stop will be somewhere sunny! With such a busy work schedule there is nothing better than some downtime with my family. It will be time to switch off, relax and recharge for a big year ahead.
